Find your level
Your complete guide to Edinburgh's weekly Salsa, Bachata, and Latin dance classes for all levels.
Beginner
Brand new to Latin dance - no experience required.
Who it's for
You've never danced the specific style before, or you've only tried it once or twice. Maybe you went to a wedding, or a friend dragged you to a class. You don't know any moves yet - and that's exactly the point.
What you'll learn
The basic step, how to hold your partner, weight changes, and a handful of foundational turns. Teachers break everything down slowly and teach with patience and encouragement. You'll also start hearing the rhythm in the music.
How long to stay here
Most people stay at beginner level for 2–3 months of weekly classes before moving up. There's no rush - a strong foundation makes everything else easier later.
Open
All levels welcome - dance with everyone in the room.
Who it's for
Anyone, regardless of experience. Open level classes and socials are designed to be inclusive, mixing brand new dancers with seasoned regulars. Perfect if you want to drop in without worrying about whether you're 'ready' for a particular level.
What you'll learn
Material is pitched so beginners can follow along while more experienced dancers focus on styling, technique and connection. Expect accessible patterns, plenty of partner rotation and a relaxed atmosphere where the focus is on having fun together.
How long to stay here
Open classes work as a one-off drop in, an ongoing weekly fix, or a friendly stepping stone before committing to a levelled course.
Improver
Comfortable with the basics, ready for a bit more.
Who it's for
You can do the basic step without thinking about it, you've learnt a few turns, and you can dance a full song with a partner without stopping. You want to add more variety and start linking moves together.
What you'll learn
Combinations of turns, smoother transitions, better lead-and-follow connection, and the start of styling (footwork, arm placement). You'll begin to feel like you're dancing rather than counting.
How long to stay here
Typically 3–6 months. This is where most dancers start going to socials regularly, which speeds up your progress more than any class.
Intermediate
Confident social dancer working on technique and musicality.
Who it's for
You can comfortably social dance with strangers, you know plenty of moves, and you're now focused on how things feel rather than what comes next. You want cleaner technique, more musicality, and a wider repertoire.
What you'll learn
More complex patterns, body movement and isolation, musicality (hitting breaks, playing with timing), styling, and refining your connection. Classes assume you already know the fundamentals.
How long to stay here
Many dancers happily stay at intermediate for years. There's always more to refine.
Advanced
Experienced dancer pushing technique and artistry.
Who it's for
You've been dancing regularly for a few years, you go to socials and festivals, and you're working on details most people don't notice. You want challenging material from teachers who'll push you.
What you'll learn
Advanced patterns, complex musicality, deep technique work, choreography, performance skills. Classes move quickly and assume strong fundamentals across multiple styles.
How long to stay here
Ongoing - advanced dancers often supplement weekly classes with workshops, festivals and private lessons.
