    Edinburgh classes: FAQs

Do I need a partner to start classes?

No. In fact most people go to classes without one. Edinburgh classes rotate partners throughout the lesson, so solo dancers are the norm. Beginner courses are specifically designed for people turning up on their own.

Which dance style should I start with?

For us at bailemo, all Latin dances are fantastic and so it really depends what you are looking for. Salsa is fast and fiery with a fiesta feel whilst bachata is slower with an arguably gentler learning curve. Salsa and bachata make up a large proportion of the scene here in Edinburgh so could be great first options. Kizomba and Cuban salsa are great if you are looking for connection. Our learn page breaks down each style in more detail.

What do beginner, improver and intermediate mean?

Levels vary slightly between schools, but in general beginners learn the basic step and a handful of moves, improvers consolidate timing and lead/follow, and intermediates work on musicality and more advanced patterns. See our levels guide for a full breakdown.

    Can I join a class part-way through a block?

Often, yes. Classes marked 'drop-in' welcome new starters every week. Structured courses with a fixed syllabus usually ask you to start at week one. Each class card tells you which type it is and there is so much going on that there is something for everyone.

How much do classes cost in Edinburgh?

Drop-in beginner classes typically run £8 – £12, with multi-week courses often working out cheaper per session and costing between £25 - £35 per style typically. Exact pricing is shown on every class card.
