What's the difference between Cuban salsa and crossbody salsa?
Cuban salsa (Casino) is danced in a circular pattern with a close, conversational connection, while crossbody (LA-style, on 1) salsa is danced in a linear slot with more spins and styling. Cuban places more emphasis on Afro-Cuban body movement and rhythm than on flashy turn patterns.
Can I dance Cuban salsa at regular salsa socials in Edinburgh?
Yes - most Edinburgh salsa socials are mixed and Cuban dancers and crossbody dancers share the floor happily. Some nights also dedicate a slot to Rueda calls.
Do I need to learn Rueda to dance Cuban salsa?
Not at all. Rueda is a group format danced in a circle, while Cuban salsa partnering can be danced one-on-one at any social. Many people enjoy both, but they're separate skills.
Is Cuban salsa beginner-friendly?
Very much so. The basic step and circular timing are quick to pick up, and the focus on connection over flashy moves means beginners can enjoy social dancing within a few weeks.
